Paint a New Story

BURL SAYS: “Merry is the foundation of the radio show. She is the Queen of identifying and contacting guests, researching their work, and developing questions.” Burl co-hosts  and writes a follow-up topical article on each episode. He reaches a larger audience by publishing these articles at http://www.opednews.com/author/author58753.html.  We will feature one of these articles per week on our COVE page.

ENVISION THIS: By embracing our interconnectedness with all being on earth, we can change the world.

Charles Eisenstein is one of the seminal and pioneering storytellers of the new world. He explains how “fully embracing and practicing the principle of interconnectedness” will help us transcend our planetary crisis and have a positive influence on the world.. His latest book, The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible, serves as an empowering antidote to the cynicism, frustration, paralysis, and overwhelm so many of us are feeling.  Charles reminds us that we are all connected, and our small, personal choices bear unsuspected transformational power.  Charles reveals how our culture’s guiding narrative of separation has generated our current crises.  He shows us how we can change that narrative by telling the real-life stories of courage, kindness, and self-trust. He brings to conscious awareness a deep wisdom we all innately know: “Until we get selves in order, any action we take—no matter how good our intentions—will ultimately be wrongheaded and wronghearted.”  Joanna Macy, author of Active Hope says that he offers us “a rich feast for mind and heart.”  Vicki Robin, author of Your Money or Your Life says, “He isn’t just describing a possible world.  He is helping us find our way to it.”  We are deeply honored to have this visionary guest with us to discuss how we can become more effective agents of change and have a stronger positive influence on the world.

ENVISION THIS: A technology that heats and cools homes, increases comfort, saves money, and benefits the environment all in one

Our guest, Adam Barker-Hoyt of Maine Alternative Comfort, sees the efficiency and savings offered by mini-split heat pump technology as something that can substantively benefit people, the environment and the economy.  He brings his knowledge, skills, and experience in the fields of energy, math, science, philosophy and teaching to his work drawing up specs for a home, educating potential customers, and training sub-contractors to install the mini-split heat pumps.  Adam has installed heat pumps in over 150 Maine homes, including that of the energy guru, Dick Hill, Professor Emeritus of the mechanical engineering department, and the governor’s mansion.  His website claims, “A typical homeowner in Maine spends roughly $3,000 per year in oil, kerosene, propane, or electric heat.  But, a simple retrofit can cut these costs in half!  With a savings of $1,500 per year and an initial cost of $3,000, Fujitsu mini-split heat pumps pay themselves off in 2 years…  resulting in thousands of dollars of savings, increased energy security, and a greener environment.”  The mini-split system locates the noisy compressor and condenser outside the house, uses thin copper tubing that pumps refrigerant or heat directly to discreet wall mounted blowers inside. Copper tubing running through a small 3 to 4-inch opening in the wall or ceiling easily connects the indoor and outdoor units. Fujitsu’s Green Policy places the highest priority on the protection of the environment, strives to reduce the environmental impact of their products throughout the product lifecycle, and seeks to reduce risks to human health and the environment from the use of harmful chemical substances or waste.

ENVISION THIS: People from both sides and the concerned world standing up in a war-zone to declare “We refuse to be enemies!

The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”  So says our guests, Sabine Lichtenfels and Sami Awad , whom we are interviewing from the Westbank.   50 Israeli and Palestinian peace workers have set up in the midst of the current fighting.  They are putting their lives on the line in support of a peaceful settlement to the violence exploding that has killed more than 700 people with 100 children amongst them.  Due to the extensive bombing of even schools, mosques, hospitals and private homes people can no longer find protection or shelter. Hatred, fear and anger are at a peak in the whole region.  In this turbulence, peace workers from Israel, Palestine and other countries are holding a five-day vision camp in the Westbank. In the middle of the war they hold a peace vigil and create a frequency of calmness in which mutual perception, sharing, deep listening, clear thinking and vision building is possible. They say, “Together we can give a clear sign to end the war.”  Sabine is founder of the Vision Camp, co-founder of the Peace Research Centre Tamera in Portugal, theologian, and pilgrim in the name of Grace. She initiated the RING OF POWER-A GLOBAL SPIRITUAL NETWORK OF PEACE, a spiritual- political meditation network. Sami Awad is Executive Director of Holy Land Trust.

ENVISION THIS:  A film on quantum physicist, David Bohm, reveals how we can reconnect with the true nature of humanity and life on Earth.

Our visionary guests are author F. David Peat and filmmaker Paul Howard.  Peat has authored twenty books on popular science with topics ranging from synchronicity, to chaos theory, to the life of David Bohm. Howard is a documentary filmmaker of international reputation.  Peat and Howard are teaming up to produce a documentary on David Bohm, a physicist whose take on Quantum Physics resulted in major ramifications to how we look at life.  Bohm’s analysis of our language and thought structure leads to the (r)evolutionary insight that we may, at our core, be alienated from our world and our own deepest nature.  Changing the paradigm in which we have trapped ourselves is central to our reconnecting with the true nature of humanity and life on Earth.  If we are to co-create a better future, we need to reconnect to Nature that produced, supports, and nourishes us.  Could Bohm’s work help us to feel less alienated?  This is one of the questions we will pose to our guests.

Carolyn-2013-High-Res-CroppedENVISION THIS… Walking The Spiritual Path of Industrial Civilization’s Collapse!

Carolyn Baker, author of Navigating The Coming Chaos: A Handbook For Inner Transition and Sacred Demise, offers emotional and spiritual tools for preparing for living in a post-industrial world. Carolyn believes the collapse of industrial civilization is rapidly unfolding and offers us an opportunity far beyond mere survival, even as it renders absurd any attempts to “fix” or prevent the end of the world as we have known it. It presents humankind with unprecedented and daunting challenges in the area of energy, environment, and economics. In her books, therapeutic practice, and talks, Carolyn provides a toolkit of emotional and spiritual preparation for an uncertain future. She offers us an opportunity to step across an evolutionary threshold in order to become a new kind of human being living in conscious self-awareness of our intimate connection with all life in the universe.  Through stories accompanied by her drumming, she reveals to us the timeless, universal, and heroic import of the inner transitions she calls us to undertake. Carolyn Baker shows us how the transformation of human consciousness and the emergence of a new paradigm as a result of discovering our purpose in the collapse process, allows us to come home to our ultimate place in the universe. Our willingness to consciously embark on the journey with openness and uncertainty may be advantageous for engendering a quantum evolutionary leap for our species and for the earth community.

craigENVISION THIS:  A world in which science and only science no longer provides all the answers to everything

Craig Weiler, author of TED, WIKIPEDIA, AND THE BATTLE FOR THE INTERNET,  is a psychic and Parapsychology Journalist who blogs on the PSI controversy at The Weiler Psi. He documents the TED controversy over removing Rupert Sheldrake and other parapsychology researchers from the TEDx speakers list.  TED is “A nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. .”  Craig believes TED administrators caved in to pressure from organized, dogmatic skeptics, betraying their mission.   He explains how “The Internet is changing how science is done by making the skeptical gatekeeping much more difficult. Information about consciousness research has spread far and wide and its supporters are growing ever more vocal. Among those supporters is a growing group of people who are persistent and engaged enough to do battle with the skeptical paradigm.”  Craig advocates for an end to “scientism, the belief system in which science and only science has all the answers to everything.”  He writes, “This regrettable condition acts to preclude their unbiased consideration of phenomena on the cutting edge of science.”  On this episode with Craig, Merry and Burl will explore how breaking free from this cultural meme of science as an “ism” (the ultimate arbiter of what may be thought and acted upon) can help humankind co-create a more inclusive, less materialistic future. Craig Weiler seeks to convince us that “skepticism is a form of bigotry,” the next bigotry that we must confront to evolve into a more open-minded, evidence based culture.  We will suggest that Craig is, himself, acting as a skeptic to scientism.

ENVISION THIS: “If we wish to stop the atrocities, we need merely to step aside from the isolation. There is a whole world waiting for us, ready to welcome us home.”

Derrick Jensen’s new book, STRANGELY LIKE WAR-THE GLOBAL ASSAULT ON FORESTS, provides us with powerful proof we must address the corporate assault on life NOW, before it is too late. In an age marked by seemingly unstoppable environmental collapse and the urgent quest for solutions, environmental philosopher Derrick Jensen, the voice of the growing deep ecology movement, reveals for us new seeds of hope. Derrick walks his talk, convening Earth at Risk: Building a Resistance Movement to Save the Planet, a conference that featured thinkers and activists who are willing to ask the hardest questions about the seriousness of our situation. Together they build an unassailable case that we need to deprive the rich of their ability to steal from the poor, and the powerful of their ability to destroy the planet. They offer their ideas on what can be done to build a real resistance movement–one that can actually match the scale of the problem. A DVD is available at http://www.derrickjensen.org/work/books-dvds-cds/#actionperson. Hailed as the philosopher poet of the environmental movement, Derrick Jensen is author of twenty-one books and was named one of Utne Reader‘s “50 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World.” He has packed university auditoriums, conferences, and bookstores across the nation, stirring them with revolutionary spirit.

ENVISION THIS: a global alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth, all Her inhabitants, all the children, and for the next seven generations to come

Mona Polacca, Hopi/Havasupai Elder, is representing the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers to discuss their mission, vision, and passion. Mona is an author in the field of social sciences, has held posts of responsibility as Treasurer for her tribe, served on several committees for Indigenous Peoples within the United Nations. and is widely known for her “leadership in the Native American revitalisation movement.” She is also the President/CEO and faculty of the Turtle Island Project, a non-profit program that promotes a vision of wellness by providing trans-cultural training to individuals, families, and healthcare professionals. As a 14-year-old Mona was recognized as a spokesperson for Native American people. “Blessed with the gift of nearperfect oral memory, her elders spent hours teaching her the old ways and prophecies word for word, trusting their information would be safe in her hands.” The Mission Statement of the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers is: “We represent a global alliance of prayer, education and healing for our Mother Earth, all Her inhabitants, all the children, and for the next seven generations to come. We are deeply concerned with the unprecedented destruction of our Mother Earth and the destruction of indigenous ways of life. We believe the teachings of our ancestors will light our way through an uncertain future. We look to further our vision through the realization of projects that protect our diverse cultures: lands, medicines, language and ceremonial ways of prayer and through projects that educate and nurture our children.”

ENVISION THIS: A banking alternative that leads us from austerity to prosperity

Our guest, Ellen Brown, is an attorney, president of the Public Banking Institute, and author of 12 books, including WEB OF DEBT.  The back cover of its newly-released sequel, THE PUBLIC BANK SOLUTION tells us:

Shock waves from one Wall Street scandal after another have completely disillusioned us with our banking system; yet we cannot do without banks. Nearly all money today is simply bank credit. Economies run on it, and it is created when banks make loans. The main flaw in the current model is that private profiteers have acquired control of the credit spigots. They can cut off the flow, direct it to their cronies, and manipulate it for personal gain at the expense of the producing economy…This book looks at the public bank alternative, and shows …that it works admirably well, providing the key to sustained high performance for the economy and well-being for the people.” Since the bail-in in Cyprus and the bankruptcy of Detroit, her message becomes crucial. “The Western banking system today has all the earmarks of a giant Ponzi scheme on the verge of collapse: a global credit crisis extorting massive bailouts from the taxpayers; a derivatives casino with a U.S. notional (or nominal) exposure of $300 trillion; governments refusing further bank bailouts; “bail in” policies in which the largest banks are being instructed to confiscate their depositors’ funds if necessary, in a last-ditch effort to keep their doors open…Fortunately, there is a safer, more sustainable way to design a banking system.” Ellen will explain it to us. Please listen.

Winter at HomeENVISIONS THIS: Community in which we co-operate with each other, share resources, and work together as we enter a time of diminishing resources.

Our guest, Winter Robinson, is a futurist, who says, “The role of a futurist isn’t about making lots of accurate predictions, but more the act of stimulating creative thought about the future that, in turn, influences how we act today.”   She also wears many other hats: author, consultant, educator, therapist, medical intuitive, permaculturist, and gardener.

Winter says, “I have made an attempt to understand why we have come to PEAK EVERYTHING. (I think that I know “how” we got here, just not why.)” So now she adds “realist” to the list of hats she wears.

I just try live with the fact that most of us don’t see it. So, these days, instead of writing (or talking) about intuition, complimentary medicine, and magic, I write about energy descent, four season harvesting, the need for community, the need to prepare, and all matter of other things that are earth related.

And I’m up to my ears in chickens and green-house greens, a rooster who thinks the sun comes up at 3 AM, and so many projects I can’t begin to list them. The planet is still getting warmer, energy is still descending, and our economy is still tipping (big time).

The I Ching cautions us to not forcefully try to change things, rather we need to rely on the beneficial action of nature to correct things.

Perhaps that is all we can do, rely on nature.”

Gus 2http://www.blogtalkradio.com/envision-this/2012/10/25/gus-speth-an-economy-to-sustain-people-and-the-planet

ENVISION THIS…comprehensive and deep change that is rooted in a political economy and a new set of cultural values that are sustaining people, communities and nature .

To reach this vision, our guest, Gus Speth, advocates “a fusion of those concerned about environment, social justice, true democracy, and peace into one powerful progressive force.” Gus Speth is author of America the Possible,  professor of law at the Vermont Law School, and senior fellow at Demos and the United Nations Foundation.  Formerly, he was environmental adviser to President Jimmy Carter, leader of the United Nations program for international development, co-founder of two leading environmental organizations, leader of th United Nations program for international development, and dean of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.  According to David Korten, “Speth is a seasoned leader and passionate truth teller with impeccable establishment credentials…He presents a compelling case for economic transformation and spells out a policy agenda to achieve a secure and prosperous future for all.” Gus believes so strongly in what he stands for that he allowed himself to be arrested and spent two nights in jail for protesting at the White House against the Keystone Pipeline. He maintains that we have it in ourselves, even in the face of “fierce opposition and determined resistance from the powers-that-be,”  to use our freedom and our democracy in powerful ways to create a reborn America for our children and grandchildren.

Stacey Jacobsohnhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/envision-this/2012/07/13/time-banking-a-more-equitable-currency

Envision This!….An alternative economic system that pays people, no matter who they are or what they are doing, in accordance to the time they invest in a job.

Our guest is Stacey Jacobsohn, the head of the TIME INITIATIVE OF MAINE (T.I.M.E). The currency of exchange is time, accounted for by the hour, instead of money or direct barter.  This is a very egalitarian system, valuing everybody’s hour the same, breaking down the class, age, and gender inequities in our current monetary system.
